Who's risk is it anyway?

At the start of this global meltdown a catering contractor client of mine said they were being approached by many of their customers asking to rearrange the date of previously booked events such as weddings. Clearly they were expecting not to be able to go ahead with these events and wanted to delay until after the recovery from the pandemic. Many of these customers seem to think that having signed a contract for my client to deliver their services on a given day that they would be able to change this on a whim with no knock-on consequences. Indeed, many expected my client to be insured against such events.

It didn't seem to cross their minds that actually the risk was theirs as our client was not seeking to change the event details.

After we had discussed the matter for some while we decided that the risk should really be insured by the customer under a wedding insurance package which would ordinarily cover eventualities such as the catering contract are being unable to deliver a service on a given date and the costs therefore of rearranging the wedding.

My client was amazed at how few of his customers thought about, let alone acted on, wedding insurance and it highlighted the lack of thought of one's own position when engaging services such as this.

Always consider what might happen given the worst case scenario and how this may leave you financially.

If in doubt discuss with your insurance broker who will be happy to suggest solutions.
