Storm damage to fences
The high winds today have resulted in a loss to a client which is one of those areas of insurance that is always able to frustrate.
It is a standard exclusion of property insurance policies that storm damage to fences is not covered. Therefore if a tree is up-rooted and falls across the fence then the resulting damage will not be picked up by your insurance. This will apply whether it is a commercial property or your own home.
It has always seemed like a slight anachronism as the event is unforeseen but insurers clearly feel it is too likely an occurrence to provide coverage for.
It is probably one of these risks that can be mitigated by ensuring that large trees at risk of toppling are regularly pruned and fences themselves are maintained to ensure that they can withstand high winds.
